About Çanakkale

Çanakkale strategically important province is located at the edge of the Çanakkale Strait (Dardanelles) that is in the north-west part of Turkey. One of the world’s narrowest straits used for international navigation, the Dardanalles connects the Sea of Marmara with the Aegean and Mediterrnean seas, while also allowing passage to the Black Sea by extention via the Bosphorus. Çanakkale, like İstanbul, embraces two continents with one arm reaching out to Asia and the other Europe. Çanakkale city has a population of 129.000 people.

Çanakkale is one of the culture and tourism centers of Turkey with its nature, unique buildings, ancient cities, historical city walls, martyr’s cemeteries, civil architecture examples, clean coastlines and beaches with blue flag, magnificent islands, termal springs, aquable climate, various agricultural products, regional cuisine, various kinds of fishes, handicrafts, folklore.

Çanakkale’s coast is 671 km, sea and port determine settlement of the city as well as other sea towns. Environment of the waterfront and port is active day and night.

The history of Canakkale region (Troas) so called as Hellespontos and Dardanelles in ancient ages has gone back to about 5000 BC. Troas includes important archaeological sites such as  Troia, Neandria, Alexandria-Troas, Assos, Dardanos and Lampsakos.

The Trojan Ruins, which is 30 km away from the Çanakkale Centrum is one of the most ancient centers of population. Trojan Ruins that is a cultural center of Anatolia nearly 2000 years has 9 layers. Troia that is mentioned in the Iliad of Homer is sixth of these settlement layers. Assos, that is 87 km South of Çanakkale is an ancient seaport bordering on Behramkale village of Ayvacık.

Gallipoli Peninsula, in which Çanakkale Wars taken place, become a national park in memory of the 500.000 soldiers. The Çanakkale Monument to the Fallen was built in memory of the 253.000 Turkish heroes.

Kaz Dağı National Park (Mt. Ida), located between Aegean and Marmara Regions, belongs magnicifent landcapes, restfull green areas, hot springs and several mythological stories.
